Rome44.com was founded by WW2 history buffs with the aim of bringing the story of the WW2 Battle for Rome to a wider public. The Second World War in Italy is sometimes described as the forgotten campaign, overshadowed by the D-Day Landings in Normandy. We believe it is a fascinating chapter of the war and a fascinating chapter in the history of the eternal city. The WW2 Battle for Rome began on the 17th of January 1944 with the US Fifth Army’s attack on the Gustav Line at Monte Cassino  and ended on the 4th of June 1944 with the Fifth Army’s triumphal entry into Rome.

This WWII walking tour was the last tour we took in Rome, and it completely transformed how we understood everything we had seen before. It added essential context to the city and revealed how deeply WWII and Fascism are embedded in Rome’s streets and monuments.

Incredible tour! We definitely got more than we could have imagined. Three hours of incredible information – that as someone who really enjoys WWII history, both did not know previously, and allowed our other days in Rome to be heightened. If you’re wondering if you should do this… YES! Best tour and guide we had in Rome over our 6 day stay..
