In this tour we identify signs of the World War II era that often go unnoticed by visitors. The city of Rome was the capital of Fascism for twenty years, a Nazi occupied city for nine months and finally, in June 1944, an Allied Army, which for months had been fighting at Anzio and Monte Cassino, finally broke through, and with the help of Italian partisans, ended the Nazi occupation of the city. These liberators were welcomed into the city with scenes of wild jubilation.
Our walking tour of central Rome explains the historical events that took place in many familiar locations of the city and shows how often memorials to the era are to be found hidden in plain sight.
